Vy Tran

For as long as she can remember, Vy Tran has loved learning.

“I just love school,” Vy said. ‘I love being in a classroom learning and being taught things.”

That passion for learning led to her sights being set high on higher education at an early age.

“When I was little, I set a goal that I was going to Harvard,” Vy said.

But that goal changed when she fell in love with the idea of going to Columbia in seventh grade, she said.

All of that changed when she spent two weeks in Connecticut as part of Yale’s Young Global Scholars studying global affairs.

That experience was enough to set apart some pretty tough competition for the Clear Horizons Early College High School graduate considering she was accepted to not only Yale, but Harvard, New York University, University of Texas and Middlebury College.

Now, Vy will head to Yale where she plans to study international relations and economics.

“I really like people a lot,” Vy said smiling.

So much so, she hosted a health and wellness fair at McWhirter Elementary thanks to a community grant she received earlier this year.

Vy decided this was something she wanted to be a part of after going through her own experiences as being a part of a low income family, she said.

“My mom was never able to have insurance,” Vy said.

Because she was not able to have insurance, Vy can remember a time when her mother had pneumonia and could not do anything about it besides receive some samples of medicine because the cost was going to be way too much.

“I know this issue is preventable,” Vy said.

Vy’s health and wellness fair provided and opportunity for families who may not have had it otherwise to receive proper education and to network with area health professionals. She also had a child activities center where children were able to learn about topics such as healthy eating, exercise and basic practices such as brushing their teeth.

“It’s so important that we find a way to make these fundamental services available,” Vy said.
